6 Foods for Babies Who Experience Vomiting

As parents, you will be anxious when your baby is sick. Also, you cannot bear to see your baby constantly fussing, losing her/his appetite, especially if your baby is nauseous and vomiting. If vomiting continues, then your baby can lack nutrients in her/his body. Of course, it is not good for your baby’s growth and development.

As we explained above, when a baby vomits, she/he will be difficult to eat. So, how to overcome it? Here are some foods for vomiting babies that are recommended for consumption by babies aged 7 to 12 months:

Water

When a baby vomits, it will automatically release fluids. To replace the fluid that comes out, you must give your baby water immediately. Do not let your baby get dehydrated because it can cause your baby to experience weakness. Also, water must be given continuously so that the fluid intake in the baby’s body is maintained.

Soft Food

After the vomiting stops, you can give your baby soft food to replenish energy in her/his body. You should choose soft foods that are easy for the baby to consume and of course high in carbohydrates to immediately supply energy in her/his body.

Here are 6 foods that are good for babies to consume after vomiting:

1. Rice porridge

Rice porridge is the first soft food that you can give after your baby vomits. You should avoid giving additional other foods that can trigger nausea. Just give rice porridge first, poured with warm broth to relieve the baby’s stomach.

2. Bread

Also, bread is a good choice of soft food for babies who experience vomit. To make it easier for your baby, you must cut the bread into small pieces and flatten it. It is best for you to choose bread which is low in sugar. Thus, it does not create a bad taste in the baby’s mouth, and does not make nausea and vomit again.

3. Banana

You can give a banana if your baby does not want to eat either rice porridge or bread. Need to know that bananas contain potassium which is good for replacing nutrients lost after vomiting. Also, banana has a natural sweet natural sweetness to eliminate the bitter taste in the mouth which is usually experienced after vomiting.

4. Boiled Potatoes

When the baby is experiencing vomiting, you can also give your baby boiled potatoes. For your information, potatoes contain carbohydrates and are low in sugar. So, it is very appropriate to be consumed when the baby’s stomach is not feeling comfortable.

5. Oatmeal

Oatmeal is also food that you can give after your baby vomits. Oatmeal is already rich in soluble fiber and protein. Thus, it can immediately replace nutrients lost after vomiting. The right way to process oatmeal when the baby is vomiting is to cook it using water. To make it more delicious, you can add bananas to replace potassium in the baby’s body.

6. Wheat

Another food that can be consumed by babies when they experience vomiting is wheat.  Similar to oatmeal, wheat also contains soluble fiber and protein. For your information, wheat contains 2.2 grams of soluble fiber and 13.7 grams of protein. Usually, wheat can be found in bread and biscuits. You can give this food as a snack when your baby still does not want to eat too heavy. Wheat is enough to contain the nutrients needed by the baby’s body.

Give ORS

If your baby experiences vomiting that is classified as severe to dehydration, you should also give ORS that functions as a fluid supply. Aside from that, ORS can also balance electrolytes in the body, such as potassium, bicarbonate, and sodium which are important for the body. Giving ORS in the first 3 hours for babies under 1 year old is 75 ml/kg body weight. So, if the body weight of your baby is 10 kg, then 10 x 75 = 750 ml.

Foods to Avoid

There are also foods that should be avoided by babies after vomiting. Here is a list:

  • Milk and dairy products
  • Fatty foods
  • Fried foods
  • High-fiber foods
  • Spiced food
  • Pure fruit juices

If your baby is still vomiting frequently, you should give food little by little. Remember that giving a lot of food can make your baby vomit again. Also, giving breast milk or milk powder should be avoided first until your baby does not vomit anymore. If your baby continues to vomit for several days and shows alarming signs, immediately take your baby to the doctor. It means that your baby already needs special treatment.
